For Year 11 parents: GCSE English Language grades

Dear Parent,

As you may be aware, there have been serious concerns about the AQA GCSE English Language grades awarded this summer. The current year 11 students sat the Unit 1 examination paper in May, with some performing well, but with a significant number not achieving their target grades.

I am currently communicating with the AQA examination board to express my disappointment in the harsh marking and changing of grade boundaries. We will be requesting some scripts to be returned in order to analyse the specific criteria used for allocating grades and this information will be used to help support the students.

Your son will be able to re-sit the examination later in they year and you will not be charged for this particular unit. The English department will assist your son in the preparation for this examination.

Thank you for your continued support and I hope that you will encourage your son to work hard in all of their subjects, throughout this crucial academic year, in order to achieve his full potential and be able to choose the most appropriate future pathway.

Yours sincerely
