GCSE English Language Exam – November 2013

A letter to parents of Year 11 students

Dear Parent/Carer

I am writing to inform you that your son will be entered in November 2013 for the GCSE English Language examination Unit 1. The examination consists of reading non-fiction and media texts, responding to them and doing extended pieces of writing.

The rationale for the early entry is that the examination boards have made a decision to exclude the Unit 2 Speaking and Listening component as of June 2014. This component is worth 20% of the final grade.  Our students achieve well in this unit and to lose the marks could have a significant effect on their final grade.  Most schools, across the country, are doing an early entry.

In preparation for the examination, the English teachers will be setting weekly homework tasks.  We would be grateful if you could support us in ensuring that your son completes these.  If students fail to do homework, they will be put in after school detention on Wednesday.

If you wish to support your son further, please visit the school website and under the English department section, there will be tips on how to prepare for the examination.

Thank you for your support.

Yours sincerely

Mrs B Wedgwood
