Showcase 2014

The Beverley Grammar School Showcase is a ‘one night only’ event celebrating performing talent from across the school. whether professionally, or self-taught, it gives our students a chance to ‘showcase’ their abilities to a packed school hall, with professional sound and lighting handled by a staff & student technical team.

Mrs Beverly Wedgwood, Head of English and founder of the Showcase, retires this year making 2014 her final show. Each year, she has brought this talent together across so many disciplines, from dance to music, and theatre to magic, to create a true variety show with the atmosphere of a rock concert!

Her final show was a credit to her, with students performing, and assisting behind the scenes, exceptionally well. Hundreds of watts of audio power were shoehorned into our hall (apologies to the front row for any temporary hearing loss!) and the lighting team of Caleb Lucas and Sam Kelly, along with videographer Jaidon Rymer, rigged up equipment aplenty to show and capture the evening.

The evening wouldn’t be as special as it is without students stepping in at the last minute to put on a show and this year was no exception across all years. Dom Brown in year 7 replaced an injured drummer within hours of curtain-up, and Jacob Butler in year 13 learned a plethora of words to sing a hilarious Tim Minchin song, accompanied by Angus Lamb.  A Showcase without Angus’ incredible guitar technique will be very strange next year, as he leaves us for university. Jacob Birkenshaw also stepped in to help a somewhat under-rehearsed Staff Band sound much better!

The evening finished with a surprise medley of songs from previous shows, to celebrate Mrs Wedgwood’s last Showcase, featuring past students of the school who came back specially to celebrate a very special occasion. That this show has become integral to the school year and anticipated by students, staff and parents alike is testament to her energy and vision. She will be sorely missed by everyone at BGS.
