The Library
The Library and Resource Centre is open from 8.45 until 3.45. Students may borrow up to 3 books for 2 weeks.
Mrs Hambleton is our full time librarian with Mrs Coulbeck and Mrs Hawksley assisting during the lunch period which means that someone is always available to help with any library related queries and with any homework research.
Students are encouraged to train to become Library Assistants so that they can issue books, help with activities and learn more about how the library works.
Students can access the computers, use the non-fiction books for homework and recreational research or browse the well stocked fiction shelves. 6th form students especially have access to on-line encyclopedias, journals and magazines to support their studies.
The library is used for independent study or whole class research and offers a stationery shop for school essentials.
In year 7 students visit the library on a weekly basis with their English teacher when they are introduced to skills and the PLUS model of research to enable them to become independent learners. These skills are reinforced throughout the school, especially in class research visits to the library.
The Library promotes Reading for Pleasure throughout the year with many activities, sponsored reads and author visits. During the academic year 2008/09 the students raised over £100 for Readathon with a sponsored read and over £150 for Multiple Sclerosis when the Library became home for Comic Book Superheroes with games, prizes, activities and food. We are planning a Roald Dahl day in September and look forward to meeting authors Sophie McKenzie and Keith Gray later this year. The Library also encourages students to shadow the Carnegie and Booktrust teenage book awards.
The Library also hosts Chess club, Warhammer club and REBELS - a reading group with attitude!
Everyone is welcome; we have board games, jigsaws, activities and some fantastic fiction.
