Rationale
Student Leadership at Beverley Grammar School is vital, as given the opportunity students can have a profound impact on their school. The aims of leadership at BGS are;
- To empower students to work in partnership with staff towards shared goals.
- To provide opportunities for students to flourish within the school and wider community.
- To provide a chance for students to develop leadership skills through a variety of opportunities which impact positively within school.
- To prepare students holistically to excel in life after formal education.
Students are both democratically elected but are also able to apply for roles on the BGS students leadership team. Keeping with tradition the Headboy and Deputy Headboy are elected through student and staff votes and are the figureheads of our leadership team.
The leadership roles at BGS hope to offer students the opportunity to lead in an area which they are passionate about. To give students a voice, a school council will exist with a representative from each form in each year group. If more than one person runs for a house, a rep will be voted for by this particular form. The Head of Year will select one of these 5 students to represent the full year group and they will sit on the whole school council. In order to keep school tradition a school captain will be selected.
More opportunities are available in 5 newly created groups; a sustainability group, well-being group, charity group, diversity group and sport leaders group. Students in these groups will meet and discuss topics throughout the year and look to lead on different activities. Leadership can provide you with a range of opportunities and help you develop key skills such as communication, both your written and verbal communication skills will develop as Student Leaders are involved in a number of different activities such as presentations. Organisational skills will also be important in a Student Leadership role, and these opportunities will help you to develop your organisation skills as you will need to plan and lead upcoming whole school events. Prioritisation, listening and feedback skills are also amongst those you will develop.
