Year 7 Samba

Students have been working hard recently to create Brazilian samba performances in their music lessons. We have looked at how the famous carnivals worked and then created 30-strong percussive performances. Each class has worked as a samba school, and all students have learned each of the seven instrumental parts (surdo, caixa, repinique, reco-reco, shekere, agogo bell and tambourim). The recording below is a performance by 7S, led by Nick Clark. The structure of the piece was decided by Nick as the performance developed and the other students responded to his calls with appropriate responses. This shows how much the students were listening, co-operating and working as a team, as the structure in the recording sounds planned.

Students also showed their understanding of the carnival by designing their own samba school themes for homework. There are a number of wonderful designs below from 7F.
